On the Spiritual Gay Men Group on Facebook somebody asked a simple question:
CAN SEX BE SPIRITUAL?
It’s turning out to be our most engaging post yet, with over a hundred comments, and over 90% of the men speaking up are absolutely sure it either is or can be…..
‘100% sex IS one of our most spiritual and powerful practices when we engage with the right intention THIS is so important for everyone, but especially us as gay men of spirit. To bring spirituality into your sexuality is becoming more unified in your own wholeness.’
‘The body can make you feel very VERY connected. Bliss surrender intimacy’
‘Of course. Really gets the Kundalini going, if it is good sex…good sex is how good you can let go and surrender’
‘Tantra teaches such sex… the orgasm is different. Also I like the part about how much pleasure can one open up to and how far can one follow it.’
‘Yes. Being vulnerable and trusting.’
‘being ready to take a trip to euphoria right?’
‘I do and want to practice as such with the right partner.’
‘Sex is about bliss. Not lust. About chemistry.‘
‘Absolutely! Sex with my man is our spiritual path!’
‘Oh to find the right man to take this journey with me.’
‘Yes. That’s the kind of sexual experience I long for.’
‘I believe it can be if those involved are vibrating on similar frequencies and levels of consciousness. Imagine two people who both have nurtured their energy to a point of higher consciousness. There’s bound to be some fireworks there when they decide to deliberately and consciously come together.’
‘when its used in love n not for selfish motives ‘
‘Everything in life can be.
‘100% sex can be a spiritual act.’
‘It’s supposed to be!’
‘It’s most definitely transcendent.’
‘Of course! That’s when it is the most intense.’
‘Only had a bad experience but I think that when I find someone special it would be cool.’
‘Absolutely! Sex can be very spiritual
‘Of course it is ‘
‘Yes it is a transfer of energy between to souls. You give of yourself to another at the same time they are giving a part of themselves to you.’
We did have one or two voices coming from a different perspective:
‘Nope. Sex is entirely physical… biology/science explains ‘
‘Def not, to me is totally the opposite, and i like it this way better’
but the great majority of comments were like this:
‘Of course Sex is Spiritual’
‘Absolutely, transformative tantalising tantric divine eros.’
‘of course it is, always has been in Judaism.’
‘Yes, it can be, with the right SPIRITUAL partner.’
‘I hope so’
The thread features this thought provoking reply:
‘It’s an interesting concept. It all depends on how you see spirituality.
If you keep it true to the concept of a soul and a path to liberation and awareness, then sex for the purpose of pleasure is the opposite of spiritual because it ties you to physical pleasure derived from physical stimulation of sexual organs.
The transient joy and sometimes the sense of connection that is derived from sex can seem spiritual but it in fact is not if it did not lead to further awareness or enlightenment. In reality, if it deepens the attachment to another physical being, it is not a spiritual act.
This argument is purely based on the definition of spirituality as being enlightenment through awareness of oneself as a soul that is purely energy.
If you view spirituality differently, then you may see sex as a spiritual act.’
To close here are a couple of my contributions to the thread:
‘Sex is the most powerful way to integrate the physical, emotional and spiritual …. and the key is the mental, what we believe about it opens or limits the nrg flow. sex can be entirely ego centric and never reach the heart, but once it is connected to heart the doorways to the higher chakras, ie to the subtle dimensions, can open.’
‘Gay men were among the sacred sex workers in the ancient temples. The Christians started to call it prostitution from 3rd century. We’re mentioned in the Old Testament, Book of Kings.. The king James English translation says “there were sodomites in the temples”, but the original word, Qedesha, means ‘Holy Ones’.
‘Gay Christians don’t mention this because they are part of a church that separates sex and spirit. Harry Hay of the Radical Faeries said our job as gays today is to bring them back together ‘
